LOOK FOR QUALITY

When it comes to wearing classic style clothes, the key is to embrace maturity and strike a balance between modesty and class.

Look for modest necklines, hem lengths and fits that enhance your shape and flatter your figure without revealing too much. For example, if you choose to wear a skirt, consider pairing it with dark tights to silhouette your legs and instantly elevate your outfit. Short sleeve and sleeveless tops can be worn with a shawl or cardigan, and dresses never fail to give off a chic, sophisticated look - try classic style dresses with long or three-quarter sleeves that reach below the knee.

Nurture an eye for quality and invest in clothing that you’re likely to wear time and time again… Remember, high quality fabrics mean a superior fit and improved durability that will last.

THINK ABOUT TAILORING

Our collection of classic clothes for ladies include tailored separates, structured jackets and fitted blouses that are contoured to the body and designed to fit women of all shapes and sizes. All are great additions to your wardrobe and are wonderful foundations to creating a stunning look, but make sure that you choose clothing that fits comfortably while still accentuating your best features.

A perfect fit should be your number one goal when shopping, as this instantly achieves a polished look.

Every outfit can be enhanced by simple alterations; a little cinching here or a little hem shortening there can work wonders in making your garments look and fit much better. At The Classic Boutique, we offer an alteration service for skirts, trousers, dresses and blouses to make sure your garment is the perfect fit and length for you.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT FABRICS

At The Classic Boutique, we ensure that all of our fabrics are carefully chosen for their unique properties to provide the highest quality and durability. We offer a variety of fabric choices including natural wool and pure cotton, as well as super soft viscose and luxurious cashmere blends for a touch of opulence.

For example, lightweight cotton is perfect for a breathable summery feel, while heavier wool fabrics are better suited for colder seasons to keep you warm.

Did you know? You can identify clothing that is made from quality materials by their fine weave, soft and pliable hand (feel) and minimal texture, ranging from matte to a subtle sheen.

MATCH YOUR PRINTS

Look for timeless patterns like checks, stripes and floral prints, and choose colours that complement each other well, such as navy and white or black and camel.  Be wary not to confuse or complicate your outfit by clashing too many different prints together. Select garments that share the same pattern on the top and bottom half to produce a cohesive look - subtle classic prints in a low to medium contrast are best for blending. You could also try wearing a plain top with a floral skirt, or solid-coloured trousers with a chequered blouse to maintain an attractive balance. We offer an array of classic style clothes in solid colours and matching prints that can be mixed and matched effortlessly to create a range of different outfits.

COLOUR COORDINATE

Colour coordinating your outfit doesn’t mean wearing one colour from head to toe, it means that you should aim to make one element of your look visually relate to the other. For example, match the colour of your nail polish with your belt and shoes, or match the brown hue of your bag and shoes with the beige colour in the print of your dress.

To maintain a sophisticated look, steer clear of bright, neon colours that detract from the rest of your outfit. Neutral tones like black, white, brown, navy and grey are fail-proof colour options that make for versatile additions to your wardrobe’s colour palette as they easily coordinate with other separates. Another tip is to stick to a neutral base and add a splash of colour with accessories such as a handbag or scarf.

LAYER ELEGANTLY

To layer elegantly, it's important to keep in mind the right balance between warmth, style and comfort. Less is more when it comes to layering, so try to avoid adding too many bulky items. Instead, focus on layering lightweight pieces that complement each other without stealing the limelight.

For example, you could wear a soft Merino cardigan or tailored blazer over a dress and complete the look with a belt to cinch the waist and add shape to your outfit. As a rule of thumb, we suggest a maximum of three layers: the base layer, mid layer and outer layer. This could be anything such as a t-shirt or blouse, waistcoat or cardigan, and a jacket or coat that can be worn together for a flawless ensemble.

Experiment with different textures, such as a silky cotton blouse with a thick wool cardigan to add interest to your outfit. Don't be afraid to play with different proportions, too – a short jacket can look great with a long dress, while a longline jacket can work well with a blouse and trousers.

ACCESSORIES MATTER

Sophistication extends to the accessories you wear to complete your look, but you don’t necessarily need lots of accessories for an iconic look. Keeping your accessories, especially your jewellery, to a minimum is guaranteed to look both modest and chic. Opt for more delicate jewellery as larger jewellery like big statement necklaces run the risk of overpowering your look.

Pay attention to your legs if they are exposed and throw on quality hosiery to present a polished look where needed. Don’t forget, exposed feet call for a perfect pedicure and will look best teamed with flats or medium heels!

Make sure that your purse or handbag looks the part, too. This is where a traditional leather handbag can complement your outfit and add the finishing touch to your look.
